Advice to Baruch College

What are some suggestions you would make using new media?

1. I would love to put a professor teacher evaluation system at Baruch College, to allow students to rate their professors according to their performance. Over the past several semesters, I've noticed that student on "RateMyProfessor.com" are not rating of these professors correctly. Many students are not telling the truth about the way professors are not teach. Based on my opinion, there are some lousy professors teaching here on this campus. On some occasions, I needed to withdraw from some of these courses. Students need to be more truthful about their evaluation with some of these professors because it's the only way you can learn from someone who is passionate a about their field of study and not just simply reading from a PowerPoint.

My new teacher evaluation system will have the following criteria:

a.  Passionate
b. Clarity
c. Understandable
d. Rating (1-10)
d. Difficulty
e. Participation
f. Additional Comments

2. Another suggestion that I would like to see happen is for professor to engage their students through the Discussion section on Blackboard. I've noticed that many of these professor lacks the enthusiasm of providing help for students or tacking their progress throughout the semester. In this case, the professor can tell the students if he or she will need to withdraw from the course. Likewise, professors can use it for a learning tool for students to ask questions.

 3. I would suggest that Baruch should have more online classes and be taught their Skype. It would be a cool experience of interacting with your professors and others. I would help students who have trouble of traveling to this college. It will also help students to become more connected to their professor such as having a conversation about a particular subject that the student didn't clearly understand.

4. I would love to scrap the entire Connect system because it sucks...lol !!!

  1. Hi Jeffrey, I think your grading criteria for teachers is pretty interesting. As of now, there really is no great way to find the better professors other than word of mouth. I feel that RateMyProfessors can be biased because the comments and ratings are only students that are willing to take time to rate their professor, which are a mix of happy & satisfied students as well as unhappy students. Maybe with this criteria, we can get a better understanding of how the professors teach and if their teaching style is right for you.

  2. Hi Jeffrey,
I understand your frustration about the validity of the comments on ratemyprofessors.com. Given a list of different classes taught by various professors that we have never met before, it seems impossible to know which professor would best meet our learning style. One of the ways to solve this problem is to ask your acquaintances about professors that they have taken, so you know the credibility of their recommendation. In addition, you mentioned that Baruch should have more online classes. It’s a fantastic idea because some students do not live in the city and do not want to commute to Baruch on a daily basis. It would also make learning more interactive while opening up the classroom beyond the campus. Lastly, I agree that the Connect system is a hassle.

  3. Baruch College should have a look at this blog post and make a system for us to view this rating. At the end of the semester but we only submit our opinion without looking at our whole classmates opinion. We should be able to view what others honestly think about the class. Another thing about ratemyprofessor.com is that is very bias. I never really read a rating that a student was in between. A student that received an A in the course would rate that that the professor was easy and recommend taking the professor. Another person that failed or got a grade that they do not deserve would rage and rate AVOID, waste of time. It is hard to decide whether or not to take the professor and end up withdrawing or dropping the course.
Skype online courses would be online courses would be great too. I would feel more comfortable talking to the professor through Skype rather than in front of a class. If there were more online courses we as students can save more money on the MTA transit system.

    Great post.
    PS Connect system does sucks
